Environment
Every one of Sunshine Reclamation’s projects is undertaken on contaminated sites which have been polluting the environment for decades. Our efforts will always leave the environment in a substantially better condition than they were in prior to our efforts.
A reclaimed site that reduces toxins leaching into our waterways, aquifers and food will always be better than the toxic legacy of the past continuing to pollute for ever.
Although temporary habitat destruction may occur in the process of reclaiming a site, the sites are generally ecologically impoverished as a result of their contaminated history. However, once reclamation has been undertaken, in most circumstances the ecological niches and future biodiversity will be vastly increased.
CO2 offsets
A case by case assessment of land clearing and vegetation removal is required for each site that Sunshine Reclamation intends to work on. The guiding principle is to vegetate areas and remove colonising invasive plants (e.g. pine trees, bitou bush, lantana) in preference to native plants. Overall, the net effect of clearing undertaken on our projects is to increase the biodiversity and carbon sequestration of a site – preferably with introduction or re-introduction of native species and biodiversity.
